East Godavari with present population of 40 lakhs it is not only the centre for many major industries but also cater to the medical needs of people (mostly economically backward and girijans) in the hunterland. The nearest full fledged eye bank facility is available either at Hyderabad at a distance of 550 kms or at Visakhapatnam at a distance of 175kms away from the place and out of reach to the common people affordability. With this background, like minded and service oriented group of citizens comprising of eye specialists and philanthropic people from different walks of life formed together to form the Kakinada Foundation to run an Eye Bank and other eye related activities to combat corneal blindness and it turn help the NPCB.
